Welcome to JCTA

History of the JCTA

The Joint Canadian Tanning Association -- formed in 2002 as a partnership between the Quebec Tanning Association (ASBQ), the Ontario Tanning Association (OTA), Certified Suntanning Associations of Manitoba (CSAM), and Smart Tan Canada -- was born in response to Health Canada's proposed amendments to the Radiation Emitting Devices (RED) Act pooling the efforts of Canada's regional associations into one. The JCTA was successful in positively impacting the RED Act revision process. The association was funded in timely and responsible fashion by a variety of interests including distributors, manufacturers, associations, and most importantly salons.

Since the RED Act revision, the JCTA has been minimally active, organizing or participating in successful responses to regional and local government regulation efforts. Issues such as teen tanning, cleaning protocols and limiting exposure schedules have since made their way into the provincial/local public health arenas. While the JCTA lobbying efforts have been successful, the media – without knowing which organization to contact – still writes many stories with very little response or input from our industry.

It was time for the JCTA to take the next step, and with the cooperation of all the existing groups in Canada and many of the industry's leaders, a plan was put together in January of 2006 to get this done the right way. The industry was at a crucial time in its development. With governmental lobbying needs in mind, the development of a nationwide public relations campaign for the industry was to be a priority. The key focus identified by the re-organization steering committee was:

  1. Development of a year-round positive media campaign.
  2. Funding research to quantify positive information about UV light and indoor tanning.
  3. Representation in government matters.

A NEW JCTA has begun led by tanning facilities, with the cooperation of industry advocates.
