One of the JCTAs charges is to assist the media in presenting objective information about UV exposure.
Media reports about UV light most often have directly reflected the commercial interests of the $35 billion North American sunscreen-cosmetics industry companies that recommend daily use of sunscreen products in Canada despite the fact that sunburn is not a possibility much of the year in most Canadian cities. This practice no doubt has contributed to the fact that 97 percent of Canadians are vitamin D deficient at some point in the year, according to University of Calgary research.
The sun a free commodity has no marketing department like cosmetic/pharmaceutical companies. But the sum of photobiologic research on the benefits and risks associated with sun exposure paints a more balanced picture than pharmaceutical corporations or even most dermatologists portray in their myopic communications. The JCTA, as the voice of the Canadian tanning community, strives to be a voice of reason in this discussion.
